UK Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute reaches a 'terabase' of sequence data Jul 2008
In July 2008, the UK's Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute announced
that its researchers have sequenced the equivalent of 300 human genomes
in the previous six months, reaching a of 1,000,000,000,000 letters of
genetic code - one "Terabase". In a press release, the Sanger noted
that this "will be read by researchers worldwide, helping them to
understand the role of genes in health and disease. Scientists will be
able to answer questions unthinkable even a few years ago and human
medical genetics will be transformed."
